The summer of 1999. Star Wars: Episode 1 was making its way to the cinema, Austen Powers had a sequel coming out shortly..Ben Affleck was the most bankable movie star of the moment.
I was 13 and I bought a magzine called SCI FI world. It was summer movie previous magazine covering all the latest news . Before the internet you would have to actually go out and buy articles on the latest movies that were rumoured to be in production..and you had no where to comment on it except for your friends at school..and that may have been only two people considering the subject matter.
Flash forward to 2011! I found the SCI FI magazine in a box of old books and there was an article in it titled. The 10 Best Movies You'll Never See! This article had 10 movies along with 10 hand draw illustration dream posters to fit the films.
It's funny to me, because that was only 12 years ago and 9 out of the 10 movies have been made...twice over in some cases! I thought I would scan the original posters made for the article and line them up with the actual movie posters.
Its a funny reminder to never say never. I can't believe I took this is stone truth when I was younger. I mean come on, James Camerson directs SPIDERMAN? or Johnny Depp as the HULK? or BEN AFFLECK AS BATMAN!? Its amazing how certain things are a flash in the pan.

*Note the only movie that didnt get made to this day was a film called 'Buckaroo Bonzai 2'

A study of character

So this is a clip from the show 'Freaks and Geeks'. I keep re-watching this scene over and over again. At least 4 times a week. I just love the character. There is so much that is happening in his head as this scene takes place. His facial expressions, his body movements, the overall innocence he has is telling so much. I think its a great scene and thought I would share it since I keep going back to it.

So, I'm a big Ghostbusters fan and I've been a long time admirer of Dan Schoening's artwork. I think I first saw his stuff back in 2006 and have been following ever since.

I really wanted this look super nice and ready for Halloween 2010 (yikes, I know) but work and other things kept pushing it to the side. So I worked on it bit by bit and tonight I finished it.
Not even close to happy with the way it looks but I mean what can you do?

I took the clip right from the DVD and then used Dan's Ghostbuster designs. I added some poses because if you watch the real clip, its very stiff and I mean, you have to put a few poses in to keep it a bit more alive if youre just posing it out. I'd love to see Dan's stuff animated really nicely.

Here are two other pieces I was selling at the Wiz Con in March. I thought they were cute. I tried to get the hardcore classic gamers interested, but, honestly, there weren't that many, which really sucked because I thought they would get a kick out of these. The top 3 comments I got from kids under the age of 10 were;

" Eeeewwwwwwwww look at Mario!"

"Look at Mario! he's so fat!"

" Look Mario is a potato!"

I almost got into a fight with an 8 year old because he thought Mario shoots fire from his mouth and not his hands. It got real sad at that point. The guys had to pull me away and send me on a pizza run.

Well the Con came and went, had a really good time. but a WAY better time seeing friends who drove down. Braden Jon and Jen were great company making the trek down from Ottawa and the happy couple Adam & Rosemary joined in the festivities too! looking forward to the next con, got to meet lots of great artists' too!

If you haven't seen this yet, It's the Sheridan Animation Intro for 2010. Kevin Parry, Andrew Wilson, Allison Neil, Adam Pockaj, and myself worked on this over a day doing small clay flat cutout animation. It was a nice change up from the film since a lot of us were in the crunch of production.

I try to avoid long posts. I prefer to keep it simple. However, this was something I've been reviewing for the last few days.

I recently was watching Batman Returns ('92) and there is this scene where Batman and Catwoman have a rooftop fight...and it has the weirdest editing choices and screen direction I've seen before. I had to draw it out to explain how it happens.

Enjoy my analysis...

In shot 1- Batman falls over ledge and clasps Catwoman's whip.

Shot 2- Batman looking up at Catwoman.

Shot 3- Batman hanging over intersection with nothing underneath him but the streets.

Shot 4- Batman throws something at Catwoman and she flies back to screen left ( to what I assume is over the ledge.

Shot 5- Catwoman enters screen top right on to slanted roof ( I dont know from where...or how)

Shot 6- Batman lands on a ledge and is now looking at her, with her back facing him ( thats what the camera tells me)

Shot 7-Catwoman slides more and more

Shot 8- Batman's hand enters screen top right and pulls her to safety.

Gerry Zeldin

This was my last year of life drawing at Sheridan, and I was so lucky to have Gerry Zeldin as my instructor. Gerry has been away due to illness and we weren't sure if we'd ever see him again. But on the last day of the semester he came to his Friday class. He was a little tired and looked a little different than usual but he still made the rounds to each student. Past and present students had come to join in his last class that he would teach. It was really a surreal moment to take part in.

I've really found a great comfort zone now for my drawings. I don't worry on making a pretty picture but instead focus on getting the character across. But at the same time not forgetting the structure. Here are a selection of drawings I did in that last class. Gerry gave me lots of great feedback on these ones and I had one of the best classes in years.

(I've started using the model as my base and then applying existing characters to make them more believable, ie Bugs Bunny)

Nothing special. I drew this last night before I fell asleep. Held the pen like a brush and put no real thought into the drawing as I went along. Then this morning I just sploshed together some colours to make it look like it was on a Gameboy. Hard to believe that the Gameboy is only 20 years old...compare that to today's ipod's. Mad world.

Student Group Film- JUST DESSERTS

Here is our third year group film. Thanks go to Kyu for uploading it. Looking back now it seems alot longer than what it originally was. I would have made lots of changes too, but what's done is done. It was a great experience working with my fellow students. The scenes I worked on can be seen at 0:58, 1:32, 1:50, 1:54, 2:36...I think that's all. thought it was more, but we all worked an various parts all together.

I also lent my voice to the groom and the line; 'There He Is!'

These were an attempt at quick studies of some of the houses here I've seen in Ireland...though I feel that these are just overworked with pen and uninspiring for the most part.

Ice cream....NOW!

On the weekend, I was reading in the park and there were these parents who had this kid, and they weren't from Ireland, they had a North American accent. I wasn't sure from which country though, but everything was so peaceful and calm and then this KID, who had to be about 10 or 11 was yelling at his parents demanding ice cream. The mother would say "oh where should we go now dear?" and the father was looking at a map nodding, and grumpy over there to the side was kicking and scuffing his shoes on the castle wall saying. We're getting ice cream! Can we just get the ice cream?! and he was yelling it at the top of his lungs and everyone in the park just kinda stopped and gave the family a what they hell is wrong with your kid? look. But they left and things went back to being calm and peaceful. It's weird how when you're young something like a castle isn't that impressive as to ice cream.
And this was a quick sketch I did of the kid.

On the Victoria Day weekend I went to see the Blue Jays play a game against the Chicago White Sox. Great game, Jays 3-2. I took my sketchbook along and tried to scribble down some gestures of the pitcher's during the game. The other week The Toronto Comics Art Festival was happening. It only takes place every 2 years. Lots of fun to check out the comic community in TO. There are some special guests and lots of indie comics and work to showcase. One of my reasons to go this year was to see J. Bone. I found out about his work from the first TCAF I went to in 2007. Ever since I have been following and purchasing his work. So I met up with him and had a nice chat. In fact He already knew who I was since I have been commenting on his blog since the last TCAF. So it was a really fun time.

After I left TCAF I went down to Kensington Market and took these photos. The rain was coming down and it had this nice mood over the whole city. It was just really cool to take a minute from walking from point A to B and just watch what was going on around me.

I just finished my 3rd year at Sheridan. One more to go come September. We made a group film and just finished last week. Here are some screenshots of some of the scenes I animated. It's a about a fat guy who overeats and then enters into a world made of candy, when he eats half of the town, he is faced with fighting off the angry foodfolk and a bloody battle with his heart to make him see where he went wrong.

I've been so busy with this film project, I haven't had any time to do something for myself. All I have to show are these second sketches. I call them that, because they literally took seconds to draw. They're mostly of classmates during lectures, Teachers talking, and some life drawing poses. Once the school year is over I will be preparing to start my new film for next year. And I'll be posting a lot in regards to that later.

Cutting Room Floor

So Im working on a group film this semester...we're in production now. Pretty busy time of the year. Here is a scene I was working on in the film. It was conceived back in October of '08, boarded, workbooked, rough layout, and poses for the animtion and just the other day I had to cut it from the film. But that's not a problem. It wasn't helping the story. But I thought I'd show all the work I had done up until this point.

I slept in for class this morning...the sight of snow outside made me go under the blankets. But I wish I made it on time since we had this costumed clown model. I also uploaded these drawings I did from Thursday night. My year has a life drawing portfolio due on Friday and we all had to get a few more drawings. It was nice to see so many faces there. Its been a while since we all just got together to life draw.

Something New...

So after 19 seasons The Simpsons have made a NEW intro to the show... I was really surprised and impressed. It's amazing really to see the advance they've made over 20 years in the animation industry. From hand painted cels to 3D rigs and seamless camera moves. They've even gone to a widescreen format. The old one is so iconic and to me really helped define the 90's in a big way. So to adapt it into the 21st century seems like they are planning to stick around for another long time. Maybe the adaptation is a way to breath some new life, or fans into the franchise.

You know what? I'd say that this is art. by no means at any length am I a good cook. but this is art. I took the elements I needed to create something else and I put in the effort and was pleased with the end result. Just wish it lasted longer to enjoy.

Also, I'm 23 and if I want to make some eggs with crab meat at 11:30 at night...I'm gonna!

This is a work in progress. I used to draw a lot of Mario's that looked miserable, hence; Miserable Mario's. I made this animation of Mario on a run cycle. It was cleaned up with one of those rainbow multi colour pencils. More to do on it but this is a first pass.

I do plan to post more stuff, but right now its the crunch/calm before the storm. I'm working hard to get my work done for our group film and meet all the deadlines and at the same time I have a demo reel to assemble ASAP. In a week or so we will have our production fully up and running and I gotta get this work done! I had this photo taken at 3 am today. I just got home now and its 5am. So I'm off to bed for a few hours then back up to continue the workload. But I will get some stuff up when I have the time... I didn't want people to stop checkin this blog out thinking I had forgotten about it.

Here is a sketch I did of Kenny Hotz and Spencer Rice from KENNYvs.SPENNY. It's a Canadian show that focuses on two best friends who take part in competitions each week to see who is better at certain tasks, the loser of each competition must do a humiliation that the winner chooses for the them. It's not for everyone, but it must be doing something right since they're in to their 5th season (a rare occurrence for Canadian programming).

30sec Story Reel

An assignment I'm working on. It's in the rough reel stage now. There is to be five seconds of cleaned up, painted, animation which is an action analysis. I chose the jump & grab action. One of the aspects of the assignment is that it has a 30 second time frame. If anyone wants to give me their opinion one what they think that would be great, no time like the present to fix things. Wish it were better viewing quality...oh well it's only the rough, right?

Ottawa Internation Animation Festival

This past weekend was the OIAF, my first time going too. It was amazing. Didn't draw a whole lot but that was only because there was SO much to do. I'd have to say the highlights were the Pixar/Disney panels on two of their shorts (Presto & Glago's Guest), The Teletoon student awards, short film competitions and of course the Eric Goldberg lecture on Character Animation. Here are some photos taken from there.
